Introduction
Set in the heart of Snowdonia, Llechwedd Slate Caverns is one of North Wales’ most popular visitor destinations. The attraction takes guests deep underground to experience life as a 19th-century slate miner. The team wanted to bring the tour to life using immersive AV, while preserving the authenticity and atmosphere of the historic site.
The brief
The project needed to blend cutting-edge AV technology with a rugged, heritage-rich environment. Llechwedd’s team wanted to enhance the storytelling experience through soundscapes, lighting effects, and timed sequences, all without interrupting the flow of live guided tours. Importantly, the AV equipment had to be robust enough to operate reliably in damp, dark underground conditions.
The solution
Piranha AV designed and installed a fully integrated AV system tailored to the unique demands of the caverns. We used weatherproof speakers and ruggedised lighting fixtures rated for high humidity and low light.
To create atmosphere, we installed ambient soundscapes with directional audio cues triggered by the tour guide. Synchronised DMX lighting added drama and supported key storytelling moments. A central touchscreen control panel was provided for tour leaders to easily manage audio and lighting sequences without technical complexity.
