Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service

Incident Command Training Suite

Project deliverable

  • 1 Training pod.
  • 1 Lecture room.
  • 2 Meeting rooms.
  • 1 Station control room

Piranha Audio Visual designed and built Cheshire Fire’s first ICTS in 2010 which won a national government award the following year.  In 2018 the service started investigating replacing the suite as part of an ambitious plan to build a purpose built training facility that allowed the training of many disciplines including Command Training.

Following a tendering process Piranha AV were invited to design the new training suite, building on the success of the previous suite and incorporating the latest technologies and developments.  After a design phase lasting about 12 months our technicians got to work installing the new suite.

Each of the four training pods has a large, curved projection screen measuring 3.6m wide by 2m tall powered by an 8000 lumens high definition Epson projector.

Sony displays (TV screens) allow for additional information to be shown to the candidate.

A Bose surround sound system immerses the candidate in the sound track.

A camera and microphone allow the recording of the candidate in full high definition.

The control room accommodates 4 stations with half the room shown here.

Specialist desks house the simulation PC’s and large displays show CCTV images from around the suite.

Operators wear headsets to hear and talk to the candidate.

Control touch screens allow simple set up of the exercise.

The two lecture rooms each include a projection screen powered by another 8000 lumens Epson projector.

Bespoke lecterns house the room computers.

Both lecture rooms can open up into one large room.

Images from around the suite can be routed to the projection screens allowing senior staff members to review a candidate.

In addition to the above, the suite also provides the following functionality:

  • 4 Simultaneous assessments.
  • 1 Multi-sector assessment by linking software simulations together.
  • Link to Outdoor Command Vehicle (with cameras, mic and simulation on board).
  • Curved projection screens sized to match 120 degrees peripheral vision.
  • Fully matrixed system architecture: Any computer or camera image can be routed to any display or projector.
  • Video injects into each pod.
  • Laptop inputs in each pod allowing the room to be used for meetings.
  • Every exercise recorded using advanced and comprehensive data analysis system.
  • Lighting controls to all areas from touch screens.
  • Touch control screens on each desk in control room and in all rooms.
  • Master Touch panel in control room with all controls and manual overrides.
  • Candidate navigation of simulation in each pod.
  • Full high definition imaging throughout (1920 x 1080).
  • 10m wide x 6m tall 4 projection edge blended multi-building simulation smoke house.
  • RescueSim, XVR and Fire Studio compatible.
  • Effects lighting in corridor spaces to simulate different ambient lighting conditions outside pods.
  • Site wide fibre networking allowing images and data to be routed from one room to another.
  • Custom desks in the control room.
  • Bespoke joinery lecterns in the lecture rooms.
  • 2x Quad view multi-view / multi-window video processors with customisable layout options.
